Most tourists choose to visit the monastery in the early morning, when the partygoers have returned to their hotel rooms and the area is relatively peaceful. Built towards the end of the 16th century, the Ayia Napa Monastery was constructed by the Venetians and is in a remarkable state of repair, considering its age. A further attraction that is situated by the monastery's south gate in an ancient sycamore fig tree (ficus sycomorus), which is reputed to be over 600 years old. Look out too for the protective medieval walls, which were originally designedTo deter pirates from attacking.
