Four Cypriot films stand out in Thessaloniki International Film Festival

Four Cypriot films, competed at this year`s 59th Thessaloniki International Film Festival, which took place between 1 – 11 November. Three of them competed at the Greek Section and one at the International Competition Section of the Festival.

According to an announcement from the Ministry of Education, the films are “Smuggling Hendrix” by Marios Piperides (International Competition Section), “Sunrise in Kimmeria” by Simon Farmakas (Greek Cinema Festival), “Pause” by Tonia Mishiali and “China Town” by Aliki Danezi – Knutsen (Greek Cinema Festival).

In a total of 20 films of the Greek Program, the film “Pause” by Tonia Mishiali (Cyprus-Greece Co-production) received the prestigious award of the International Federation of Film Critics (FIPRESCI) for Greek Film and the 2nd Prize of ERT.

According to the jury`s rationale, “this is a film showing a woman experiencing a situation full of challenges where imagination is particularly necessary.”

Marios Piperides film “Smuggling Hendrix ” (co-production of Cyprus, Germany, Greece) continues its successful international tour after the prize of best international narrative feature of Tribeca Film Festival 2018, winning this first Special Mention at the International Competition Section of Thessaloniki Festival, “for his humorous approach to a complicated political situation”.

All of the above films are co-produced with the Ministry of Education and Culture of Cyprus and have received financial support through the Cyprus Cinema Advisory Committee (SEKin).
